WOMEn's studies 230 & women's rights alliance Collaboration
In order to make our Action Research Proposal accurate and effective we needed to collaborate with a campus/community partner. By collaborating with a campus/community partner we could possibly be provided helpful input, space to conduct our photo shoot, approval for posters and photo participation. We decided to collaborate with the Women's Rights Alliance because, as a group we felt their beliefs, thoughts and actions would be beneficial to our project.
Women's Rights Alliance: The mission of the NIU's Women's Rights Alliance is to promote the success and well being of women and girls, to improve gender relations by providing opportunities for women and men to engage in cooperative work ad open dialogue, to provide the NIU and DeKalb communities appropriate forums for raising awareness of and working against sexual assault, domestic abuse, and gender discrimination, to educate women and men about reproductive biology and healthy, and to provide women and men opportunities for confidence and leadership skill development.
WOMS 230 and WRA both wanted to know "What makes you beautiful?". Putting on a photo shoot with NIU students all shapes, sizes, qualities, and characteristics helped break the stereotype that models have to fit a specific criteria. In partnership we promoted a healthy body image to the campus. With our topic being women’s portrayal in the media, the photo shoot of what is showing 'reality' in comparison to what they see in magazines, on billboards, runways, and television. WRA volunteered their time to be in the shoot as approve flyers to put around campus in order to promote and get the word out to all students, both men and women. WRA's past experience supporting fundraisers as well as partnering with other organizations to support a healthy body image among young adults helped make our Women Studies 230 project a success. The collaboration between WRA and Women studies 230 positively impacted NIU's community.
